The journey from whichever part of the east the Magi as recorded in Matthew chapter 1:1-12 were coming from was no doubt a long one, coupled with the fact that they have no physical picture of what Joseph and Mary would look like, it will be foolish to embark on such a journey without being exceedingly convinced it is the right thing to do.
When they came to Jerusalem, they saw a king who as at the time had the backings of the people and religious heads but he was not the king they left their country to come and worship. They patiently ask for direction and didn’t give up even when the stars disappeared because their convinction was built on solid faith.
This, sadly is not so for majority in our churches and communities today. Many people who have claimed to have heard or seen God has no convincing evidence to back it up. One of the signs of one who has encountered God is the manifestation of the spirit of faith, unfortunately, many christians cannot independently explain why they go to church every Sunday and carry out those religious obligations they’ve done in ages.
If many things being done today in our churches as commanded in the bible are not attracting the blessings promised by God in His words, it is because many have being carrying them out without being spiritually convinced. Take tithe and first fruit for instance, many have remained faithful and have consistently observe it just because their pastor commanded it but the blessings attached are not evident because their action is not a product of faith.
Permit me to ask you why you become christian in the first place. Why do you chose the church you currently attends, pay tithe and even pray to God? Christianity is gambling to some people, they are not sure if they are actually saved talk less of going to heaven. Are you an usher, a chorister, a Sunday school teacher or a constant church goer just because you want to impress people? The bible says in Jeremiah 29:13, “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart”, the Magi in our study today didn’t pay Jesus a visit because they have heard a story of messiah from their ancestor or even from the signs of the star; rather, they came because they were convinced a king that will bring redemption to the world was born and it is their duty to go and pay their respect.
Their act of worship and giving is a product of genuine conviction. No matter what you do, no matter how acceptable and praiseworthy it is in human eyes, it will never be acceptable to God if they don’t come from a heart of conviction and understanding. As you go out today, cultivate the habit of being intentional about your actions. Don’t do things to impress people or earn social media validation but because they are the right things to do.
